The Tower U facility is unique in our industry and demonstrates the SBA commitment to tower training and the safety of our climbers, as well as our commitment to and support of safety as an important function of the company.
The safety of our tower climbers has been a key focus of the company since it started in 1989. Since 2001, tower climber training has been required for SBA employees and others working in the industry. In 2013, SBA opened our internally branded facility “Tower U”, headquartered in Pelham, Alabama, to consolidate training in one location. This facility helps to meet the need for highly skilled tower professionals and provides a four-day safety certification program that all SBA employed tower climbers must complete before climbing. Reinforcing our commitment to safety, our safety professionals offer their tower rescue training expertise to train first responders when available.
While we do not offer training to contractors, we do require our contractors and those working for the carriers and tenants to abide by our best practices. SBA conducts random job inspections to ensure compliance, and should the contractors not comply with these practices, we will shut the job down.

In accordance with best industry practices, Tower U training at SBA includes: Quality, Tower Safety & Rescue, Controlled Descent, Rigging, Crane Signaling and Capstan Hoist Training. Once certified, the tower climbers receive a complete bag of safety gear to use when working.
