Our approach to environmental sustainability starts with areas that have the greatest potential for impact.

That is why our focus is on reducing our energy consumption and using resources more efficiently. SBA first ensures continuous compliance with all conservation, permitting and land management regulations. Our business model then furthers our commitment to environmental sustainability, as our cell towers are built to host equipment from multiple tenants. By hosting multiple tenants on our towers, each of which has a relatively small geographic footprint typically ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 square feet, we reduce the SBA environmental footprint. Further, the ground beneath our tower sites is often permeable, allowing surface water to be absorbed through the ground rather than contributing to surface-water runoff. Many of our sites are also equipped with LED lighting, which reduces energy consumption and lowers our impact on avian species.

SBA provides tenants with access to space on our towers, while our tenants provide all of their own utilities in almost every instance. Therefore, our tenants consume most of the energy at each site by use of their equipment. The vast majority of our sites run on electricity powered from the electrical grid and only have generators that are used for backup power in case the electrical grid goes down. Like most of the operating equipment at our sites, the generators are typically owned and maintained by tenants. In fact, a very small percentage of sites have generators owned by SBA, and virtually all of those generators are used as backup power in the event that the electrical grid goes down. As of 2019, less than 1% of our total sites (286 sites) house generators owned by SBA. Of those generators, just three provide primary power for the sites. Our Vehicle Fleet

We have also focused on improving the fuel efficiency of our vehicle fleet and reducing the number of miles driven. Our domestic fleet is minimal – comprised of 246 vehicles on average in 2019 – most of which are noncommercial motor vehicles and five of which are hybrid vehicles. In 2020, we added a sixth hybrid vehicle to our domestic fleet. Further, at the end of 2019, our international fleet was comprised of only 66 vehicles. The vehicles are primarily used to visit and service our sites and towers and to visit third parties in connection with our site development process. We proactively use fleet route optimization software to organize our site visits to improve efficiency and drive down CO2 emissions.

2019, the estimated Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions from our vehicles in the United States totaled 3,932 metric tons of CO2, which is a slight increase from 3,813 metric tons in 2018 but still down from 4,336 metric tons in 2017. In addition, our policy is to replace vehicles once they reach 150,000 miles with new vehicles that are typically more energy efficient.

Energy and Resource Conservation

As part of our energy and resource conservation efforts, we have started replacing all existing incandescent and fluorescent lights in our headquarters with LED lighting. At the completion of this project, we will have replaced 2,360 T-5 bulbs, which will reduce our energy consumption by over 182 million watts per year. We also reduce our energy consumption by using occupational sensors for our office lights and by purchasing IT equipment with power-saving modes.

Our company’s energy consumption is driven almost entirely by the electricity powering our building facilities and towers, as well as the fuel used in our company vehicles. In 2019, our electricity consumption in the United States and Canada was approximately 3,848-megawatt hours (MWh) from our building facilities and 32,936 MWh from our towers. SBA delivers primary power for several of our tenants to use to power their equipment on our towers. The electricity consumption attributable to that service is included in our electricity consumption estimates and is responsible for a significant part of the reported consumption.

In working toward a lower carbon future to address the harmful effects of climate change, we are taking steps to make personal mobility more environmentally friendly. To support that transition and help our employees reduce their emissions and carbon footprints, we have installed charging stations for electric vehicles at our headquarters, which are available at no cost to our employees. 

Additionally, to further our commitment to sustainability, SBA recently partnered with a local utility company to install eight additional charging stations at our headquarters. Not only will our employees be able to use the charging stations for free, employees in general are six times more likely to purchase an electric vehicle when charging is available at their workplace. SBA is proud to be actively involved in the initiative to expand Florida’s charging infrastructure, which has the potential to increase charging station availability by more than 50%.

To reduce our contribution to landfill waste, we have expanded the types of items that we recycle, which include paper, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans and plastic containers. In addition, the cafe in our headquarters now uses recipes that utilize root to stem and other parts of plants, reducing food waste that would traditionally end up in landfills. In connection with tower development, we engage in environmental preservation by reducing waste through advanced construction techniques and the reuse of materials, including entire towers when appropriate.
